Shotgate is an area of 1.25km2 situated on the edge of Wickford, in the district of Basildon, East Essex, and lies within Wickford North Ward. December 2019 records show 19.6% of the demographic as 0-17yr old’s, 61.3% as 18-64, and 19.1% as over 65’s. The majority of the population are UK born. As of the 1st April 2020, the electorate stands at 2833.

Iron-age pottery found at Shotgate Farm shows that the area was inhabited in 300BC. During Saxon times common-land was marked into strips known as ‘Sceats’ and this is believed to have been the origin of the ‘Shot’ in the name “Shotgate”.  Of four farms in Wickford, listed in the Domesday Book of 1086, one would have been on the area of Shotgate; Ames Farm.   Around 1747 an Inn, the King’s Head, is recorded at the site, and the Ames Farm was renamed Shotgate Farm, suggesting that there was also a tollgate nearby.

The first houses were built in 1907, and in 1927 modern day Shotgate was built, with the Avenues, Bruce Grove & Fanton Chase taking shape, on the Shotgate Farm site.  This was expanded in 1989 with the Hodgson Way Housing Estate and Industrial area, named after WWII RAF Pilot Officer William Henry Hodgson, who, after being shot down, managed to pilot his aircraft away from the houses and ditched into the fields now known as Hodgson Way, ensuring everyone’s safety.

On 1st April 2007 Shotgate became the first area of Wickford to have a Parish Council.  The Parish Council has 7 Councillors, with three committees; Personnel, Garden and Events, 2019 saw four major events held by the council, unfortunately due to the pandemic, all planned events are currently postponed.

Despite facing some very unusual circumstances the council were still very busy, during 2020 and in an attempt to cheer everyone up, they placed more flower baskets along Southend Road, and new planters in the Park Garden, there was also a new base for the Table Tennis table and the addition of two fabulous games tables, in the main park, although their arrival was delayed due to COVID related delivery issues. Bawdsey Park also got two new benches.  The summer saw the welcome addition of a refreshment stall in Shotgate Park, and this is hoped to continue for 2021 onward.  Christmas 2020 saw new lamppost lights and of course the beautiful tree by the pharmacy, unfortunately there was no service to accompany the lights switch on, fingers crossed for 2021.

Shotgate has a number of shops, including a Post Office, pharmacy and convenience store.   There is also a doctor’s surgery, Baptist Church, and community center, which hosts many groups and clubs, including the popular Zebedee’s pre-school and Shotgate Over 50’s group. The Industrial Estate has many businesses with both retail and manufacturing units, and exercise clubs. Wickford Town Football Club have recently relocated to Shotgate, and are looking to extend their capability to include adult games. The three parks in Shotgate, which are owned and managed by Basildon Council are well used, and surrounding open spaces are popular with our many dog owners.

The Parish Council are committed to enhancing Shotgate for those who live and visit the area.
